• How to Protect Your Home When You Are Away

  • Please take a moment to read the following tips for keeping your home protected in your absence. On a daily basis your home is at some point vacant. Whether that means a scheduled, long awaited and much deserved vacation or a simple trip to the grocery store or to pick your children up from school. One of the most important precautions you can take is to remove or hide valuable objects that are outside or in yard. This brings attention to your home and tempts burglars. These things include bicycles, scooters, skates, tools, etc. In addition, never leave boxes from newly purchased TVs/electronics in your trash or outside your home. This makes it obvious that you have a brand new TV inside and makes your home a target. In times like these, when electronics are such a big part of our lives, it is important to keep certain aspects of your life and schedule private.

If you are out of town or away on vacation, try to refrain from changing your voicemail or social media status to indicate so. Posting photos of your vacation is better done on your return. Setting a timer for your lights to come on automatically when you are away will give the impression that you are home or have someone watching your house. If you do not have this ability and do not wish to invest in timed lighting, you can always leave at least one light on inside your home and the TV or sound system on. This gives the illusion that you are home and may deter a break in. When away, be sure ask a family member or trusted neighbor to pick up your mail and newspaper on a daily basis. If you do not have a security system, warning stickers or signs and automatic motion-activated spotlights may also deter break-ins.

A lot of people think burglars only work at night. That is not true. Most spend weeks investigating the houses that they are interested in breaking into and often times know your daily schedule. If you are away from home, they will know. This is not meant to scare you. However, it is our job to be honest with you about these dangers.
